LowCostPIL – Low-cost Indoor Location based on WiFi and Ambient Sound

Description:

This project aims to study, explore and test new methodologies that combine the user’s home WiFi network with the sound spectrum obtained through the smartphone’s microphone. The results of this combination should additionally allow to understand user patterns and how to improve WiFi house coverage.

Outcome:

Applications such as fall detection and dementia monitoring have been a driver for the development of multiple approaches for indoor location. However, the majority still presents important limitations, which this work attempts to address. A low-cost indoor location solution will be developed, based on the WiFi signal, joined with the ambient sound, as recorded by the user’s smartphone.
