SkinUlcersEcosystem – Service Ecosystem Design for Skin Ulcers

Description:

There has been a growing interest on Telemedicine and other Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and their ability to improve efficiency and ease the burden on health services, but a great potential still lies unexplored. Smartphones, in particular, are well suited to maximize the accessibility of solutions to early detection of pathologies due to their ubiquity, relatively low cost and growing technological capabilities. Recent improvements on the quality of image capture and on processing power have opened up new opportunities.

Skin ulcer patients typically are admitted for longer and readmitted more often than average, draining considerable resources from SNS – Serviço Nacional de Saúde (National Health Service). The great majority of this cost and suffering can, however, be avoided if detected early in these pathologies’ development. According to DGS – Direção-Geral da Saúde (Directorate-General for Health), registration and characterization of skin ulcers are essential for proper monitoring of patient care, since it is possible to correctly establish treatment measures and improvements in care.
