Fraunhofer AICOS was present at MEDICA 2019, in Düsseldorf, Germany, from November 18th to the 21st, where side by side with the world's top medical device experts and companies, showcased Derma, Ophta and Micron, as part of AICOS’ flagship projects and portfolio items.
For four days, AICOS was in Düsseldorf, Germany, at the largest international fair for the medical sector, showcasing the results from its research on medical devices which set themselves apart for their accessibility in terms of ease of use and cost, while demonstrating a highly competitive performance.
This year, AICOS New Business Development Manager, Hugo Grácio, attended the fair to present our Center for Assistive Information and Communication Solutions – AICOS, our portfolio and competences set, and the technologies we have developed through our applied research activities. The presence of our NBD Manager was a key enabler for the dissemination of Fraunhofer AICOS’ applied research results and to expand our network.
Our researchers Maria Vasconcelos and Filipe Soares were also present, showcasing our portfolio items Derma - Decentralised screening in dermatology, Micron - Affordable and automated mobile-based microscopy and Ophta - Decentralised screening in ophthalmology.

The last updates to the EyeFundusScope prototype have been demoed by our researcher Filipe Soares. This project is a smartphone-based handheld optical device developed by Fraunhofer AICOS, that captures retinal images automatically for risk assessment of multiple eye diseases by Computer Vision and AI.
Also, the uSmartScope prototype, a fully automated 3D-printed, smartphone operated, microscope that allows autonomous acquisition of microscopic images, was highlighted in the fair. The uSmartScope, has been demonstrated to be suitable for supporting the diagnosis of several pathologies including Malaria, Chagas, Cervical Cancer and Microfilaria.
Finally, our researcher Maria Vasconcelos showcased our Mobile Dermatology Support System technology that captures automatically skin lesions images through a mobile application and performs risk assessment to priorities cases.
All these solutions have the peculiarity of being quite accessible in terms of their ease of use and even in their cost, while demonstrating a highly competitive performance.
