Cabo de São Vicente Lighthouses of Portugal

Description:

Initiating the "Portuguese Lighthouses" series, this coin by José João de Brito pays tribute to the Cabo de São Vicente Lighthouse. Operational since 1846, the design highlights its historic importance and the role it plays in maritime safety and navigation.

Inspired by the minting process, the design centres on a circular geometry that highlights the coin as the focal element. A transparent cover enhances its visibility, creating a clean and contemporary aesthetic.

This project explores the design of an interactive enclosure for collectible coins, combining product design, electronics, and user experience into a single artefact. The enclosure consists of three polymer components: two opaque matte-white bodies and a transparent lid that transforms the packaging into a display case, allowing the coin to remain visible while protected.

The enclosure integrates two custom PCBs, a USB-C charging system, and pogo-pin contacts for automatic coin charging. Concealed magnets provide a seamless closing mechanism, while lifting the transparent lid activates the coin's illumination for approximately 50 seconds. By combining materials, electronics, and interaction, the enclosure transforms traditional coin packaging into an engaging collectible display.
